Where Are They Now Wednesdays – Evan Oliphant

In the “Where Are They Now Wednesday” Series, we look back at past Braveheart Trophy winners to see what they are doing now. Highlighting Evan’s journey from being a professional cyclist to a Scottish Cycling coach emphasises his ongoing impact in cycling.

Evan Oliphant is a renowned former professional cyclist with an impressive palmarès, including seven Scottish national titles and notable performances at the Commonwealth Games.

He began his career competing in local Scottish grass track events in the Highlands, while Evan’s father participated in heavy events such as caber tossing. His first club was the Wick Wheelers.

Evan competed in the Under-23 road race at the 2004 UCI Road World Championships in Verona, Italy. The following year, in 2005, Evan was named the Braveheart Cycling Fund Trophy winner.

Oliphant represented Scotland with pride in the 2006 Commonwealth Games held in Melbourne, showcasing his skills on an international stage. His dedication continued as he participated in the 2010 Games in Delhi. In 2014, he returned to compete in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where the thrill of racing both on the road and the track was amplified by the support of his home crowd. When asked to describe his best racing experience, Evan stated, “Competing for Scotland at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games,”

Evan rode professionally with several UCI Continental teams: Recycling.co.uk (2005–06), DFL–Cyclingnews–Litespeed (2007), Plowman Craven (2008–09), Endura Racing (2009–11), and Team Raleigh‑GAC (2012–16).  And in 2013, Evan won the British National Road Series.

Since retiring in 2016, he has remained actively involved in cycling, mentoring young riders as an endurance coach for Scottish Cycling, covering both road and track disciplines, and helping to develop the nation’s future cycling talent.

Some of the cyclists that Evan has mentored include Oscar Onley, Callum Thornley, Eilidh Shaw, Kate Richardson, Lauren Dickson, and Morven Yeoman.
