Where Are They Now Wednesdays – Kate Cullen

In the “Where Are They Now Wednesday” Series, we look back at past Braveheart Trophy winners to see what they are doing now. Highlighting this week is Kate’s journey from studying architecture to becoming a Commonwealth Games cyclist.

Kate Cullen began her cycling journey while studying architecture at the Glasgow School of Art. A velodrome design project led her to try riding at Manchester Velodrome, and she soon fell in love with the sport. Upon returning to Edinburgh, she took to racing at Meadowbank Stadium and rapidly progressed from there.

She claimed the title of British champion in the points race in both 2006 and 2007, and in 2007, she also won the scratch race. Additionally, in 2006, Kate was awarded the Braveheart Cycling Trophy.

Born in Cornwall but having lived in Scotland since 1999, with a family hailing from Ayrshire, Kate was the first ever female to win a cycling medal for Scotland when she took bronze at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in the Points race on the track.

She was selected again for Team Scotland at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, competing in both track endurance events and the road race.

After retiring from competitive racing, Cullen transitioned into architecture and major events and in 2017 became a Board Director and Athlete Representative for Scottish Cycling—bringing athlete perspectives to governance and performance programming, and is now working on her third Commonwealth Games, heading up the temporary infrastructure department.
